Representation: Musical theater works - The Black Rider, Alice, Woyzeck Recognized as a major American songwriter in a career that spans four decades, Tom Waits has delved into recording, theater and film (as both composer and actor), live performance, and literature. His music, critically noted for its innovative arrangements and orchestrations, as much as for its literary invention, has ranged from country, blues, cabaret, waltzes and field hollers to gospel, polkas and marches. He has recorded over twenty albums, including Alice and Blood Money, both based on songs and music from past collaborations with Robert Wilson. He is currently recording, Orphans, a collection of songs he produced and wrote with his longtime collaborator and wife, Kathleen Brennan, which is scheduled for release in 2007. His most recent theatre piece called The Black Rider features music and lyrics by Waits, text from the late William S. Burroughs and musical arrangements by Greg Cohen and Waits. The piece, which was inspired by a German folk tale from the early 1800’s, premiered in 1990 in Hamburg and in English at the Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival in 1998. The Black Rider continues to be performed today, most recently in Vancouver, Los Angeles and London.
